Civics 250 is a national initiative to reintroduce and reemphasize civics education in grades 6β12 across the United States β in honor of America's 250th anniversary. Built around the life and legacy of Senator Joe Lieberman, our four-module curriculum teaches constitutional principles, civil discourse, and civic responsibility.
American democracy depends on an informed and engaged citizenry. Yet civics education has been systematically deprioritized in schools across the country β with serious consequences for our democratic institutions and public discourse.
"The strength of our democracy depends on citizens who understand it, believe in it, and are willing to defend it. Civics education is not a luxury β it is a necessity."β Dr. Katherine Murphy, Chair, Steering Committee, Hidden Light Institute

Civics 250 was inspired by the life and career of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman β a public servant whose 40-year career in elected office embodied the principles of bipartisanship, moral courage, and civic responsibility that we seek to instill in the next generation of Americans.
Senator Lieberman served as Connecticut's Attorney General, State Senator, U.S. Senator, and was the first Jewish American nominated for national office on a major party ticket. Throughout his career, he was known for his willingness to work across the aisle, his deep faith, and his unwavering commitment to democratic principles.
"I have always believed that America is not just a place β it is an idea, a promise, and a responsibility. And that responsibility falls on each of us to be active, engaged, and informed citizens."β Senator Joe Lieberman, U.S. Senate Floor Speech
The documentary Centered: Joe Lieberman forms the backbone of the Civics 250 curriculum, using key scenes from Senator Lieberman's life to illustrate constitutional principles, civil discourse, and civic responsibility in action.
The Civics 250 curriculum is organized into four interconnected modules, each using documentary scenes from Centered: Joe Lieberman as the primary instructional anchor. Each module includes lesson plans, discussion guides, primary source documents, and assessment tools.

From voting and community service to advocacy and public policy, this module empowers students to see themselves as active agents of democratic change. Includes a civic action project component.

"Let this be a call to action for policymakers, party officials, executives, educators, and community leaders: Embrace the lessons of Joe Lieberman's leadership. Bridge the divide by finding common ground with your counterparts. Lead with ethics and moral clarity, even when it's hard. Have the independence of mind to prioritize principle over partisanship. And engage with the people who feel left out, showing them they matter in our American story."
"His legacy of principled leadership offers guidance for today's divided times. He was deeply concerned that young people were not learning about civics β and believed that was dangerous for a democracy."
"We can say of Joe the very best we can say of any man. His was a life of constant consequence for his family, his friends, his nation. He was remarkably faith filled β so rich in kindness and decency, principle and great achievements for his nation."
"Thank you for giving me the honor of piloting the new Civics curriculum. There are many features I find helpful, especially the mini-context quizzes used to assess students' comprehension of the content being taught."
"Civics 250 gave our students a genuine sense of ownership over their democracy. The documentary clips sparked conversations I haven't seen in fifteen years of teaching government β students were debating, questioning, and actually caring about the outcome."
"As a principal, I'm always looking for curriculum that bridges academic rigor with real-world relevance. Civics 250 does exactly that. Our students left every session with something to think about β and something to say."
"The bipartisanship module was transformative. In today's climate, showing students that principled leaders can disagree and still work together β that's exactly the lesson they need. Senator Lieberman's story made it real."
